OVERLOAD REMOVE LOAD: Error Codes 2100-2103

Environment

This article applies to error codes 2100-2103, OVERLOAD REMOVE LOAD, for Generac air-cooled home standby generators.

Note: The term "error code" is used interchangeably with 'alarm code,' 'fault code,' 'fault alarm' and similar terminology. Error code applies to all such terminology. 

Overview

• Error codes:  2100-2103 
• LED Indicator: Red
• Mobile Link Message: The generator has experienced an overload alarm. Please contact a dealer. 
• Fault: OVERLOAD REMOVE LOAD
• Issue: The generator is being overloaded by excessive electrical load demand.
• Potential Causes: Load demand exceeds the generator's rated power capacity.

 

General troubleshooting

Identify non-essential loads

1. Review the loads connected to the generator.
2. Identify loads that are not critical during an outage. 

Remove non-essential loads.

1. Disconnect or deactivate non-essential loads.
2. This can be done by unplugging non-essential loads or turning off connected breakers in the main electrical panel. 
3. Ensure that the remaining loads, when running simultaneously, are below the generator's rated power capacity. 

Verify load management device functionality (If applicable)

If using a Generac Load Manager, verify it is functioning correctly, and lockouts are properly configured:

Remove connected loads and clear the alarm

After troubleshooting is complete, safely remove the connected loads from the generator, then attempt to clear the alarm and manually restart the unit. 

1. Turn the generator's main line circuit breaker to OFF. Never attempt to start the generator while under load: How do I know if my generator is currently under load?
    
   
2. Turn the utility main line circuit breaker to OFF. The location and appearance of the utility service disconnect will depend on the home's electrical system.
3. Clear the alarm:

• • For Guardian series generators, press OFF then press ENTER.
  • For Next Generation series generators, hold the OFF button for at least three seconds. 

Note: If the same alarm reappears after putting the generator in AUTO mode, remove additional loads or contact a Generac authorized service dealer. 

Restart the unit and return loads to the generator

If the generator successfully starts after clearing the alarm code and placing the unit in AUTO mode:

1. Allow the engine to warm up for one to two minutes.
2. Then, turn the generator's main line circuit breaker to ON. The generator is now powering the home's connected loads.
3. Finally, turn the utility main line circuit breaker to ON so that the generator will recognize when utility power is restored.

Next Steps

• Closely monitor the generator's performance.
• Continue to only power essential appliances during the outage (Sump pump, refrigerator) to avoid overloading the generator again.
• If the generator shuts down again with the same error code, it is still being overloaded. Repeat the process described above.

Preventative measures 

To avoid future overload alarms:

• Regularly assess load capacity and usage.
• If utilizing any load management devices, verify proper functionality and lockout configurations.
• Perform routine maintenance and inspections according to the maintenance schedule.
