What Is the Maximum Recommended Distance Between a Home Standby Generator and the House?

There isn’t a single, universal maximum distance requirement for how far a stationary (home standby) generator can be installed from the house or structure it powers. For example, in certain installations, distances up to 100 feet can be acceptable—as long as the installation meets local building and electrical codes.

What matters most (instead of a fixed maximum)

• Electrical wiring is properly sized for the run length to minimize voltage drop and heat buildup.
• All minimum clearance and safety requirements are followed for generator placement near structures, openings, and combustible materials.
• The installation complies with local code requirements (which can vary by location and Authority Having Jurisdiction).

Additional distance considerations

As the generator is installed farther away, additional planning may be required for these common items:

• Generator power conductors (generator to transfer switch): Longer runs often require larger conductors.
• Control/communication wiring (if applicable): Some pre-wired transfer switch whip/control wiring lengths have practical limits due to voltage drop. For example, certain pre-wired EZ switch whips using smaller control conductors may exceed acceptable voltage drop after approximately 115 feet of total length. • Fuel supply and performance (natural gas or LP): Longer fuel runs can impact pressure and may require additional design considerations based on distance, pipe sizing, and local code.
