How do fuel monitors communicate?

There are two different types of fuel monitors: LTE and Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi fuel monitors are discontinued):

• LTE fuel monitors send and receive signals from nearby cell towers. By default, they broadcast a signal every 24 hours to update fuel level data. It is recommended that users confirm reliable cell service in the region where the device will be installed. The fuel level monitor is supported by service from multiple carriers including Verizon, and does not require purchasing service from a cellular provider. 
• Wi-Fi fuel monitors and the tank utility mobile app (now obsolete) establish a connection with a local Wi-Fi network.

How can I get a fresh reading of my fuel level?

• To force a reading on the tank monitor hold the activation magnet to the monitor for 3 seconds and 3 seconds only. The device will transmit a new reading within 30 minutes with adequate signal.

Does the orientation matter?

• Fuel monitor device (how it’s mounted on the tank): Yes. Mounting it the right way helps reduce water getting into the device. For mounting guidance, see How Should I Properly Mount the Tank Utility Device?
• Fuel tank setting (what you pick in the app): Yes. You must select the correct tank orientation in the app (horizontal/vertical, above/below ground). The app uses different math for different tank shapes, and this setting helps keep fuel level readings accurate. Is the fuel monitor compatible with my existing propane tank?

• The Generac LTE Fuel Level Monitor is compatible with R3D Remote Ready propane dials. Confirm your propane dial is supported using the below guide:

Note: Dials can typically be replaced with a compatible R3D dial. You may need to consult your propane company to see if this is something you can change on your own or if it is required that they complete it. What is the minimum propane tank size?

• Propane tanks that supply fuel to a Generac home standby generator must be at least 250 gallons. However, some installations may allow unique LP tank configurations See this article for more information: What Is the Minimum Size of  Propane Tank that Can Be Used with a Home Standby Generator?

Can I connect a fuel monitor to multiple propane tanks?

• Yes, this is possible assuming the tanks are properly connected. The fuel monitor should be installed on the tank that is nearest to the fuel regulator. To ensure proper installation, we recommend working with a Generac authorized dealer or licensed plumber. To confirm your tank configuration, we recommend contacting your fuel supplier.

If I'm using multiple LP tanks, do I need a separate fuel monitor for each?

• If the three tanks are interconnected, and their fuel is depleted at the same rate, it is recommended that one fuel monitor be installed on the tank that is nearest to the regulator. You do not need to install separate fuel monitors for each tank. Monitoring one tank should provide an accurate representation of the overall propane level for the interconnected tanks. To confirm your tank configuration, we recommend contacting your fuel supplier. 

What batteries do fuel monitors need?

• Fuel monitors require an L91 lithium energizer battery.

What do I do if there are not lights on the fuel monitor?

• If there are no lights on the fuel monitor, and no lights are illuminated after activating with the magnet, replace the batteries. 

Note: The Gen 5 fuel monitor batteries are not replaceable.

Already have a monitor but unable to add to Mobile Link?

• If the monitor was a Wi-Fi monitor, these have been discontinued. Reference discontinuation article.

This content may be outdated and is offered for reference purposes only.
