Home standby generator extended warranties

Generac offers extended warranty options for its home standby and commercial generators. Generac warranty coverage applies only to defects in material and workmanship (manufacturing defects). The warranty does not provide coverage for issues deemed to be the result of improper installation, or damage resulting from an outside source of any kind: What Does My Home Standby Generator Warranty Cover?

Extended warranty coverage is available in 5-year, 7-year, or 10-year terms and can be be obtained through either:

• A Generac Authorized Sales or Service Dealer.
• A Promotional program for qualifying generator purchases.
• The Generac Power Plan

Note: The Generac Power Plan is available for select generator owners. Purchasing a Generac Power Plan requires an offer letter with an invitation code. For additional details about the Generac Power Plan, call (866) 309-4139.

Extended warranties (5, 7, or 10 years of coverage for manufacturing defects) replace the standard warranty rather than add to it. For example, the extended warranty provides a full term of coverage against manufacturing defects for the total selected term (e.g., 7 years of coverage), as opposed to tacking extra years onto the end of the standard 5-year plan. How are extended warranties different than the standard limited warranty?

Generac warranty coverage applies only for defects in material and workmanship (manufacturing defects). The warranty does not provide coverage for damage resulting from an outside source of any kind. 

5-year limited warranty coverage:

• Years 1–2: Major components, parts, labor and limited travel - "full term of coverage" for manufacturing defects.
• Year 3: Major components and parts only (labor & travel no longer covered).
• Years 4–5: Major parts component only (parts, labor & travel no longer covered).
  

Note: Major component coverage is on engine (short block) and alternator (rotor and stator) parts only in years four and five. See the warranty statement for more information.

The standard 5-year limited warranty coverage begins upon the successful start-up and/or on-line activation of the unit. This coverage reduces over time as outlined in the warranty statement.

5-year, 7-year, or 10-year limited warranties:

• Years 1- Full term (5 years, 7 years, or 10 years): Major components, parts, labor and limited travel - " Full term coverage" for manufacturing defects.

Extended warranty coverage begins upon the successful start-up and/or on-line activation of the unit and provides a full term of coverage for the total selected term (e.g., 7 years of coverage), which effectively replaces the original warranty and extends the originally diminishing periods. It does not tack extra years onto the end of the standard 5-year warranty. 

 

Deadlines for purchasing extended warranties

The time frame for purchasing an extended warranty depends on the generator model:

• For liquid-cooled units (22 kW - 150 kW), homeowners have a timeframe of 1 year from the date of activation to secure an extended warranty.
• For air-cooled units (9 kW - 26 kW), homeowners have until the end of their factory warranty period to secure an extended warranty from a dealer.

Promotional extended warranties 

Generac frequently offers extended warranties as part of promotional campaigns. The availability of these promotional offers is subject to change.

• IHC promotional warranty - In-home consultations can result in an extended warranty if the homeowner ends up purchasing through the dealer as a result of the consultation. This warranty is only available for first-time buyers. More information can be found on the warranty promotion page . 

Does Generac sell maintenance contracts? 

No. Maintenance contracts or service plans are sold through Generac Authorized Service Dealers. These optional plans typically cover scheduled maintenance tasks like oil changes, spark plug replacements, valve adjustments, etc. The cost of a service plan varies by dealer. Is a past repair covered if I purchase an extended warranty afterwards?

Repairs that occurred prior to purchasing an extended warranty, and were paid for out of pocket, are not covered.

For example:

• The fuel regulator on Dave's generator failed on 10/1/2024.
• He contacted a service dealer, had it replaced, and paid for the repair out of pocket because his parts warranty coverage had expired.
• Then, Dave purchased an extended warranty on 10/31/2024. He asks to have the cost of the fuel regulator repair covered under warranty.
• Because the repair occurred before he purchased the extended warranty, the repair cost is not covered.
  
  

What should I do if my extended warranty is about to expire?

Contact a Generac Authorized Service Dealer near you to determine eligibility and to purchase an extended warranty.
