Generac Home Standby Generator Warranty Details

​Generac offers 5-year limited warranties for most home standby generator models, a 3-year limited warranty for the PowerPact, and a 3-year limited warranty for the EcoGen model.

Extended warranties

Generac also offers extended 7-10-year warranties for home standby generators through various programs and campaigns. These are obtained through Generac's dealer network. Extended warranties will have terms and conditions that differ from the standard warranties mentioned in the Warranty guidelines section below. Warranty guidelines

• Unit must be registered and proof of purchase available
• Warranty begins upon successful start-up and/or activation of the unit
• This warranty is transferable between ownership at the original installation site
• Warranty only applies to permanently wired and mounted units
• Proof of performance of scheduled maintenance must be available for warranty claims
• Warranty repairs MUST be performed by an Independent Authorized Servicing Dealer
• Travel allowance is limited to 100 miles max and 3 hours max (per occurrence, whichever is less) round trip. Additional travel will not be covered
• Warranty DOES NOT cover the cost of maintenance or damage due to improper installs
• Steel enclosures are warranted against corrosion caused by factory defects for the first year of ownership

Accessories

Accessories are not covered by the generator warranty, and typically have their own separate warranty coverage. Examples include:

• Cold weather kits

Generator and routine maintenance

• Rust on enclosures after 1 year. Rust at any point is not covered if it is caused by improper installation, location in a hard or saltwater environment, or scratches where the integrity of the paint is compromised.
• Costs of normal maintenance
• Rental equipment used while warranty generator repairs are being performed.
• Products that are modified without Generac authorization, including enclosing a generator in a secondary enclosure.
• Starting batteries, fuses, light bulbs, or engine fluid

Environmental conditions & damage

• Damage caused by accidents, shipping, handling, or improper storage
• Damage caused by the use of improper fuel
• Damage due to using non-Generac parts
• Damage caused by any mode of transport deemed not standard by Generac
• Additional costs for overtime, holiday, or outside-of-business-hours repairs
• Acts of God, theft, fire, or other matters beyond the manufacturer's control
• Failure due to abuse, neglect, improper installation, or rodent infestation

Note: While your warranty cannot cover these items, some of these can be covered under your homeowner’s insurance policy. Be sure to inform your insurance provider when you purchase a home standby generator so that it can be included in the policy

 

What will compromise my generator's warranty?

Improper generator use and installation practices

The following installation practices and uses will compromise the warranty of a Generac home standby generator:

• If the generator is used as Prime Power (i.e. Where no utility power is present such as hunting cabins, etc.)
• If the generator is physically disconnected and moved from its original installation site
• If the generator is used to charge backup battery systems for alternative energy sources (this does not apply to the EcoGen).
• If the installation is improper and/or violates code (Clearance requirements, wiring, fuel supply, etc.) See the What Should I Know About Clearance Requirements When Installing My Generator? article for more information.
• If the original design of the generator is modified (extending the exhaust, etc.)
• If the generator is installed indoors.

FAQ

How do I find maintenance records for warranty claims?

Proof of performance of scheduled maintenance must be available for warranty claims.

Depending on who performed the maintenance, maintenance records may be accessed in a variety of ways:

• If a Generac dealer has performed maintenance, they may have records on file detailing a generator's maintenance history.
• Generator owners who perform their own maintenance must keep their own detailed records of completed maintenance tasks, in digital form or on paper.

Is the control panel covered under the warranty?

If I move the generator to a new address, will this affect the warranty? 

How can I get a printed certificate of my warranty?
